2010 FEMALE BMX RIDER OF THE YEAR and

2nd in the BMX Supercross World Cup Series

Mountain Biking Champ wants 10 years
Posted on 19 October 2010. Tags: bmx, caroline buchanan, mountain biking, women, work championships

After a decade of international competition, two MTB world cups, and numerous podium finishes in international BMX contests, World Champion Mountain Bike Rider, Caroline Buchanan reveals some of her 10 year plan to sportstar.com CEO Megan James.
“Anne Caroline Chausson won gold in Beijing for BMX when in her early 30′s, and she is an incredible athlete.” Buchanan says, admitting that she is hopeful of similar longevity.  “I think that it all depends on how well you look after your body, but I still want to be competing competitively on the international circuit at the age of 29, and that’s 10 years from now.”
She acknowledges that the journey will be challenging with the sports changing and many young guns rising to the top, but then admits to being attracted to overcoming challenges.
“It is always a great thing winning a race, but what is a great feeling is winning while overcoming odds and rising to the challenge and surprising myself with my abilities,” she says, her conviction evident as she talks of her more immediate plans.
“I was over the moon (with winning my second MTB World Cup). The feeling was just as great as winning the first one. I am definitely happy and proud of myself, but I am now focused on BMX and the 2012 London Olympics.”
“I have done one BMX World Cup, but was not content with my performance there. I always want to be better and I am looking to take my riding to the next level, whatever it takes, “she says.
“The Olympics are the ultimate goal for any athlete, being the pinnacle of sport. When BMX was announced as an Olympic Sport for Beijing 2008 I was ready and competitive enough to be part of the process but too young, as there was an age minimum of 19.
“I always love a challenge so competing at the highest international level in both BMX and Mountain Biking has been great for me to build my skills and knowledge. I enjoy both disciplines but have decided, after winning my 2nd MTB World title that I will focus my energy on BMX.
For Buchanan this means, and she knows it, being at the top of her game in 2011, at all of the BMX World Cup rounds.
“The Australian Team needs to qualify Australia as an eligible country and then, if ranked in the top 4 countries, 2 girls will be selected to go to London to represent Australia,” she says.
Pressing Buchanan on her preparations for the challenges ahead gets a refreshing perspective that is as straightforward as it is pragmatic. She provides a little retrospective that qualifies her enthusiasm for her sport and keenness to compete.
“I was a little tom boy when I was younger and followed in my older brother Sam’s footsteps. We both started racing in 1995 when I was 5 years old and I have never looked back. I was into everything and anything when it came to sport. I even got up to a half grade below black belt in Tae Kwon Do before I was 8,” she says. “But riding my bike was what I loved best.
“I work hard. I don’t know any different, and I have a great support network,” she says, modestly adding that rising to the elite level in some Australian sports, is not that difficult.
“There are simply not that many of us, Australians that is, competing. The test comes when we are competing against the rest of the world. It is actually a greater challenge to remain competitive with the rest of the world, with there being so little competition in Australia.
Buchanan says this challenge is compounded by being a woman in a non-mainstream sport, in which a lot of the sponsorships go to men.
“The most frustrating thing is not getting the recognition that elite athletes in other sports get, and not getting the recognition that men in BMX and mountain biking at the same level get. The mountain bike industry/market is European based and for BMX it is all about America so being Australian it is very hard to get the major $/product support,” she says. “I have the same travelling expenses and the same training expenses as the guys but the prize money is nowhere near the same and most sponsors want the guys.”
“My travel expenses alone are 5 times my income. Luckily I have very hard working and supportive parents. I have the best product sponsors and support in the world, but like most female athletes I need a $ sponsorship.”
“It would be impossible to work full time, train and be at the level I need to be at without competing overseas,” she says.
Buchanan raises revenue with coaching clinics and has done photo shoots for Cleo, Women’s Health and Alpha Sport Magazine. She says is keen to do sports modeling and is a strong advocate for healthy Aussie athletes promoting Australian products rather than overseas imports .

_____________________________________________

We were lucky enough to catch up with Caroline Buchanan today on the Gold Coast. She is in town for a couple of weeks training hard with the

Australian BMX team before heading to worlds in South Africa next week.  Only recently getting over surgery on her sinuses, and having her tonsils removed,

Caroline had an unfortunate spill at Luke Madill’s training track resulting in a broken finger and stitches. This hasn't slowed her down though, and Caroline is

confident leading the Australian team towards the 2012 Olympics.

We managed to get some filming done as well as an interview, so stay tuned for a video coming online soon. Caroline is a true inspiration to all young girls,

and with her strong enthusiasm and never give up attitude, she is sure to be on top of the BMX world within no time.

Good luck Caroline!

ABC Radio Interview

Caroline Buchanan needs a big passport.

This year alone she's raced in Denmark, Andorra, Austria, Scotland and Slovenia - with events to come in South Africa, USA, Switzerland, France....

And Canberra.

The Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships are being held in Caroline's backyard - and she's got a great chance to not only do well, but possibly win a world title.

The Canberra home of the 2009 Worlds, Stromlo Forest Park, are a bittersweet reminder for Buchanan.

While Stromlo's been a happy hunting ground regarding victories, the venue's phoenix-line emergence from the 2003 bushfires are a constant reminder that Caroline's family lost nearly everything in nearby Duffy, saving not much more than a couple of bikes from their gutted house.

Caroline Buchanan first started racing bikes at five. That makes her, at 18, a veteran of 13 years of competition.

Not only that, but she competes in both the Mountain Bike discipline of Four Cross and BMX - that's twice the calendar dates of many of her rivals.

Both events are short sharp sprints over rough, jump and bump filled tracks, up against rivals that will do almost anything to get to the line first.

You need to be tough. Crashing happens.

Caroline had to miss the World BMX titles after a starting gate failed to open and she fell over the top of it, landing on her helmeted face while her body continued over her head, hypr-extending her spine and tearing a disc.

With such a full schedule, she opted not to risk her recovery with the Mountain Bike Worlds just weeks away, and she's no stranger to crashing.

In 2006, aged 16, Caroline travelled to the World Mountain Bike Championships in Scotland, where she crashed in her quarterfinal round - but picked herself up and sprinted.

Her head-down commitment was such that, brakeless, she flew straight through the finish compound and collided with the fence - but she qualified for the semis, before knocking herself out, literally, in that round.

If Scotland signalled Caroline's emergence as a rider to watch, her arrival came in front of a home crowd at Stromlo Forest Park in August 2008 when she beat some of the best in the world to win.

And with another win in Slovenia earlier this year, she's marked her intention to challenge for the rainbow jersey of a world champion when the Worlds come to her backyard.

Injury forces Buchanan out of BMX Worlds
Canberra's Caroline Buchanan has been forced to withdraw due to injury from this week's UCI BMX World Championships being staged at the Adelaide Showgrounds in South Australia.
"I've never had a big injury and never had to miss out on a race before so it's pretty disappointing," said Buchanan.
The 18 year old reigning Australian Champion injured her back during training last month in Austria and, whilst she is recovering well, doctors have advised her to pull out of the Championships and concentrate on her recovery.
"I was training starts on an old BMX gate and it didn't drop when it should have," said Buchanan. "I kept going though and did a scorpion faceplant over the gate and hyper-extended my legs over my head.
"It wasn't too bad at the time and I didn't feel much pain," said Buchanan who soon after raced and won the four-cross event at the Maribor round of the Mountain Bike World Cup in Slovenia. "Apparently that, and the long flight back to Australia, did more damage to my back so I got an MRI done when I got home and it showed a tear in a disc in my lumbar region."
Buchanan had originally hoped to recover in time for this weekend's racing but doctors warned against rushing back into competition.
"All the doctors said this sort of injury needs to heal so if I had trained too early and pushed it at any time it could tear more or bulge and then it would a really long recovery time," she explained. "The doctors said six weeks and this weekend is five weeks and I've been really 'babying' it along, not lifting anything, not bending, not sitting on the couch, sleeping on my side and doing lots of physio work to get it right.
"It would have been great to race in front of a home crowd with everyone there to support me but my focus is now on preparing for the Supercross Series with the first round on next month in South Africa," said Buchanan. "It has been pretty difficult getting back into it but everytime I complete a new exercise and there's no pain I get a little more confidence back.
"I wish the Australian team all the best for this week," she said. "I have been speaking to them and they all seem really well prepared."

 Copenhagen Denmark UCI Supercross:

WWW.CAROLINEBUCHANAN.COM - reports in from UCI Copenhagen SX

Round one of the 2009 UCI Supercross series was held in Copenhagen Denmark.

This is my 1st international Supercross race and since my 1st Supercross race in Adelaide Australia may 2008.

Since that time, I have seen enormous improvements in my skills and my athletic ability.

Copenhagen is a beautiful European city, it is a lot colder here than I thought but it would definitely be one of my favorite countries that I have visited.

The Australian team was the only country that all of their riders qualified through the time trials into the men’s top 64 and women’s top 16.

Australian Results: 6th place - Lauren Reynolds

Semi Finals - Caroline Buchanan & Rachel Bracken

1/8ths - Josh Callan, Sam Willoughby, Luke Madill & Brian Kirkham

A majority of the team were racing with injuries and illness.

I got the flu in the week leading up to the event and it worsened on the days of racing making it very hard to compete at my full ability.

Myself and the team have gained so much experience from traveling over here.

Prince Fredric of Denmark came on Saturday to the watch the racing and hand out the winning trophies with heavy security.

We were lucky enough to be able to meet him up close and personal and get a team photo with him.

It has been great to be able to race against the highest level of competition in the world and see where we are at as a nation.

I’m really looking forward to meeting up with all the girls again in 2 months time at the World BMX Championships in Adelaide Australia.

My next stop is Andorra for a mountain bike 4x World Cup.

Cairns Coaching Clinic, Dec 2008

Myself and Luke Madill were lucky enough to be able to coach a fantastic bunch of BMX riders. About 118 riders attended

and everyone had lots of fun and learnt lots. Thankyou very much the Ince family for haivng me stay at their house and to

the Cairns BMX club for flying me up, letting me coach and compete in their 30th Cairns BMX race.

BMX NSW Titles, October 2008

This was my first BMX race back in 5 months since National Championships as I have been

focusing on my mountain biking. It was really good to be back on the BMX again and to be

able to compete against the Australian and New Zealand Olympians.

Practice Friday was 36 degrees and so hot, Saturday racing was cold and raining and Sunday

was thunder storms and more rain. We only had 8 riders, so there was no final it went on

points from the 5 heats that determined the positions.

With three 1st places and two 2nd places i took the win.

Results:
1st = Caroline Buchanan, Aus
2nd = Sarah Walker, NZ
3rd = Nicole Callisto, Aus
4th = Grace Ireland, Aus

5th = Caitlin Willmont, Aus

Girls Coaching Clinic (Tuggeranong BMX track Kambah ACT)  25.5.08

Today myself and Claire Whiteman were coaches in a girls only coaching clinic. We had about 18 girls split between us.

It was a fantastic day with really good feedback, meaning there will be many more in the future now.
We had some goodie bags with stickers, gym passes, posters, magazines and dvd's etc and lots of prizes.

Some pictures from today!

National BMX Championships, Adelaide 2008

BMX Supercoss Adelaide (Olympic qualifying round)
I raced in this event to gain experience in Supercross and with bigger start hills (8m tall) and bigger jumps (1st jump 11 m)
Result = 14th Elite women (only 4 juniors raced).

BMX Australian Championships Adelaide,
The competition was tough this year being the 1st year i have not won since 2000.
The girls raced well looking in good form for worlds
Results = #3 Australia Jnr elite women.

BMX Pro Bikx round number 8 Adelade,
The points were close between Lauren, Rachel and I. It all came down to this last round being a double points round.
If i had of won this race i would have ended up winning the overall.
Result = #3rd Jnr elite women

Putting me in #2nd overall for the Pro Bikx series (an australian selection criteria)

UCI BMX round Penrith Sydney (2 rounds)

Being an Olympic Qualifying round all the big names were there. The New Zealand, Japanese and Chinese teams were all there racing.

This was really good to catch up with fellow FreeAgent Team mates from around the world.

Round one, Saturday started off quite slow with a muddy track but really sped up for the finals.

Round 2, Sunday ran quick and smoothly finishing all the racing within 3 hours.

Results:

Day one UCI round = Jnr Women #1st place

Day two UCI round = Jnr Women #3rd place.

2008 ACT BMX Championships,

This year the ACT’s were held at the Melba BMX track. With around 552 entries numbers were down on the last few

years because this year there wasn’t the inclusion of a UCI round many of the pro riders didn’t come. But the A and AA

classes still had lots of exciting competition with some big names like Billy Joliffe, Tom Hubert, Leigh Darrell and Adam Sanderson.

The weekend ran really smoothly, the music done by Chester Emery was great and the track was in really condition it was really

hard packed making it super fast. There had been a few little changes done to the track since the last ACT’s held at Melba two years ago.

The trophies for 1st place in the age classes and the sprockets trophies I though were the best I had ever seen

they had a big helmet on the top of each one.

Overall the weekend was a great success and I managed to take the win in the AA women.

Update:

After the World Cup and finishing school I decided to knuckle down and get organised for the 2009 season. I turned 18 and started my own company called CarolineBuchanan.com. I did this to help me with my future riding career. I have been extremely busy lately organising everything and treating my riding as a full time job. Tim Chadd has been very helpful in helping me start my own business, taking a managing role and being my mechanic and the World Cup and National Championships.

I was selected to be part of the BMX Elite Development Squad where i have spent the last month and half training and preparing towards the selection races to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the camp so far and I am seeing many improvements in every aspect. I am now preparing my plans for the World Cup season where I will be travelling to Denmark for the BMX UCI Supercross event with the BMX squad and from there going on to compete in the following 3 World Cup 4x races in Andorra, Scotland and Slovenia before travelling home to compete in the BMX and MTB World Championships. I have a very busy year ahead of my and am looking forward to it :)

WWW.CAROLINEBUCHANAN.COM reports in from UCI Copenhagen SX
